being a successful money making blogger

FACT: 92 percent of individuals who make a new year's resolution NEVER achieve it. In fact, they've given up on it by February of the new year.

Likewise, most individuals never achieve their goal of becoming a successful blogger.

But that doesn't mean it's out of your reach.

There are plenty of individuals who have succeeded and what one person can do, another can do.

In this post I'm going to go into detail about THE BIG 5 “MUST HAVES” that will help you achieve your blogging goals. They are:

  1. Burning desire
  2. Unbending commitment to hard work
  3. Perseverance
  4. Laser focus
  5. Amazing content

If you’re missing one of the BIG 5, it's  be very difficult to achieve the success you're after.

Let's go through each of these BIG 5 “MUST HAVES” so there’s absolutely no guess work on your part as to…

  • WHY you need them.
  • WHAT they are
  • HOW to get them
  • WHAT will happen IF you get them

Me too, so let’s go.

Burning Desire - WHY You Must Have It

“You've got to have this burning desire in your chest to succeed.” Rod Stewart

Just because you “say” you want something doesn’t mean you’re willing to do what’s necessary in order to get it.

That’s WHY having a burning desire is absolutely necessary to becoming a money-making blogger.

Without it, you’re never going to make it. PERIOD!

You’ll end up like 90 percent of all the other individuals who say they want to start a blog and use it to make money.

They quit and that's because they don't have the burning desire they need to win.

It’s not the easiest thing to describe.

It’s the driver that will move you towards achieving your goals, no matter what challenges or obstacles you face.

A burning desire comes from the inside.

Once you have it, it’s not dependent on outside forces or influences to keep it burning.

It’s always there… you can’t stop thinking about it or trying to find ways to achieve it …. to make it a reality.

Jackie Joyner-Kersey, who's been called "the greatest female athlete of the 20th century", said:

“I have this burning desire to get out there and do my best. It's as if I'm keeping it all in a little bottle, and it's all going to come out when I do the best I'm capable of doing.”

Burning Desire

“I have this burning desire to get out there and do my best. It's as if I'm keeping it all in a little bottle, and it's all going to come out when I do the best I'm capable of doing.”

Blogging isn't an olympic sport, but to succeed at it, you'll need the same type of wholehearted sense of urgency that drives an olympic athlete to unimaginable heights of achievement.

You must give your very best - physically, mentally and emotionally - to achieving your goals.

Achieving online success as a blogger requires time and patience.

But, what do you do if you lack burning desire?

Great question.

What must you have to start a campfire?

Likewise, in order to develop a burning desire, you need fuel - for your mind.

Where your mind goes first the rest of you will follow.

Anything you can conceive in your mind can become a reality in your life.

So, to become a successful money-making blogger, you MUST begin with the mental part of achieving your goal.

You’ve got to develop the mindset of a blogger who has already achieved success and is making money online.

You’ve got to begin thinking like you’re already there.

One of the best ways to develop that mindset is reading and listening to other successful, money-making bloggers.

Filling up with this kind of mental fuel is vital to spark and fire up your burning desire.

Following are some of my favourite individuals in this space.

These are bloggers and their blogs you may want to read and subscribe to in order to learn from the best and keep yourself in a strong and positive state of mind for blogging success.

It’s a goldmine of priceless advice that will help you upskill yourself in order to succeed as a money-making blogger.

Besides learning as much as you can about blogging and how to successfully make money with your blog from the individuals and the blogs I recommend above, another rich resource of mind fuel is Youtube

I use Youtube every single day to keep my mental game on and stay in “The Zone” I need to be in for success.

Personally, I don't think the blogging experts spend enough time on the importance of your mindset.

But having the right mindset, and keeping it "right" are vital to success in any of your endeavours, including becoming a successful money-making blogger.

Here are some Youtube videos for you to watch and listen to that will keep your mindset right and create the burning desire you need to succeed online.

What Will Happen If You Create A Burning Desire For Success?

This is where the proverbial rubber hits the road.

Once you've lit that fire and are continually fuelling your burning desire to achieve your goal of becoming a successful money-making blogger, you're going to be able to handle the work needed to be done.

That's what's up next.

Unbending Commitment to Hard Work - WHY You Must Have It

Because if you believe that you’re going to start a blog and begin making, even a part-time living from it within the next few months, you’re in for a rude awakening.

That’s why Commitment To Hard Work is #2 on the list of the BIG 5 “Must Haves” to be a Successful Money-Making Blogger.

In the words of Dwayne Johnson,

Click to Tweet

Perhaps the only shortcut to success is learning from the trailblazers who’ve gone ahead of us.

Individuals that I’ve mentioned in the section on Burning Desire are trailblazers and you’ll learn a lot from them.

But the very activity of learning requires a commitment to hard work.

You must schedule time every single day to learn:

  • How to set up your blog
  • How to write well
  • How to attract an audience and/or drive traffic to your blog

Those 3 things alone will require a lot of time on your part.

And committing time to those 3 things requires you sacrificing time you would normally use for other activities.

Take learning to write well as an example.

It may be that your writing skills leave much to be desired.

That’s no problem if you’re hiring an agency or a freelancer to write all your blog posts, assuming you have the money to invest in that kind of service.

But if you don’t have the funds, or if you simply want to write all of your content yourself, you must make time for the process.

And the process takes a lot of time.

For instance in his blog post, How to Be a Good Writer (If There Is Such a Thing), published author Jeff Goins suggests the following for becoming an effective writer.

  1. Read.
  2. Get a good editor (he suggests a peer editor to start).
  3. Capture ideas.
  4. Write every day.
  5. Rewrite.
  6. Get inspired.

Looking at this list you realize that there’s going to be a serious helping of hard work involved.

Like becoming skilled at any other art, becoming an effective writer takes time.

It requires daily practice.

The input of others to provide feedback on your writing.

And the stimulus provided by your surroundings to inspire you to consistently come up with great ideas for your blog.

All of that takes time and a commitment to hard work.

Darren Rowse, the founder of ProBlogger, details his journey from hobby blogger to making a full time living from blogging in, Becoming a ProBlogger - A Story in Many Parts.

Darren Rowse of Problogger

His story takes us all the way back to November, 2002 when he published his first blog post on Blogspot.

It took until 2005 for Darren to make the transition to full-time blogger.

That's a 3-year journey involving a lot of blood, sweat and tears along the way.

Darren provides great insight in his post about what you should expect and what you need to be willing to do to become a successful money-making blogger.

He acknowledges that blogging for income takes time, as well as hard work and discipline.

Unbending Commitment to Hard Work - What Is It?

The Oxford Dictionary defines commitment as:

  • The state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc.
  • A pledge or undertaking.
  • An engagement or obligation that restricts freedom of action.

And it defines hard work and hard-working as:

  • A great deal of effort or endurance
  • Tending to work with energy and commitment, diligent.

With those definitions in mind, I believe it's safe to say that neither I nor anyone else can define what commitment to hard work is going to mean for YOU.

How many hours will you spend daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly to achieve your goal of becoming a successful blogger?

What is being committed to hard work going to mean for you?

Your personal circumstances, like every other person's, are unique to you.

Therefore, only you can decide what a commitment to hard work is going to mean for you in terms of the time and effort you put into your blogging.

But regardless of what it means to you I'm confident of one thing.

If you've got a burning desire to become a successful blogger, you're going to work consistently and hard to achieve your goal.

HOW To Develop Unbending Commitment To Hard Work

You develop a commitment to hard work by focusing on the outcome you're after. Here are my suggestions for getting into hard work mode.

  1. You must visualize what success as a money-making blogger is going to look, sound, feel, taste and smell like.
  2. Write a list of the benefits you're going to get by achieving your goal.
  3. Tell other people about your goal. Doing so will provide you with "positive pressure" to continue working hard to achieve it.
  4. Break down your BIG goal into smaller, more manageable goals or milestones that you can look forward to achieving along the way.
  5. Read daily. Even if it's only for 15 minutes, you absolutely must make time to read. Every. Single. Day.
  6. Have a daily Not To Do List. We all waste a ton of time on activities and tasks that don't matter. Make a list of them and avoid them.
  7. Limit your work hours. Working towards becoming a professional blogger doesn't mean 18-hour days. You need time to relax, refresh and renew physically, mentally and emotionally.
  8. Get started. Nothing builds inspiration and momentum like getting started. Don't overthink things. Just start. This alone will go a long way in helping you develop a commitment to hard work.
  9. Celebrate every win. Big or small, make sure you celebrate with colleagues, friends and family. Or even with just yourself.

What If You Develop Unbending Commitment To Hard Work?

Committing to hard work leads to mastery of your subject. The more you read and learn and do blogging, the more your blogging skills will improve until you become a master.

It leads to an immense feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction.

Because of your high level of preparedness, you'll quickly recognize unexpected and surprising opportunities when they come your way. Some people call this luck.

It builds strong and good character. You'll waste a lot less time and you'll strengthen your self-discipline.

It increases your self-confidence. As your blogging skills improve and you move towards mastering your craft, your confidence in achieving your goals will become stronger

That list of the benefits of hard work is inspiring, isn't it?

So, don't be afraid of committing to hard work. It'll only serve you well now and in the future.

Big Must Have #3

Perseverance - Why You Must Have It

Martin Luther King Jr.

What do you do after you've developed unbending commitment to hard work ...

... and you've worked really, really, really hard for a long time ....

... and you still haven't seen the results you're after?

"Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did." Newt Gingrich

Perseverance enables you to keep your nose to the grindstone when the going is tough.

Perseverance is grounded in your vision for future success.

Earlier in this post, I wrote about developing unbending commitment to hard work.

Number ONE in that list was "visualizing what success as a money-making blogger is going to look, sound, feel, taste and smell like."

When the going gets tough - and it will - if your vision of future success is clear and alive in your minds eye, you'll PERSEVERE.

You'll PURSUE your goal without the slightest waver in your resolve and regardless of the obstacles, challenges and disappointments you face.

How To Develop Perseverance

  1. Be clear about WHY you want to become a successful money-making blogger. How are you and others going to benefit when you achieve this goal?
  2. Starting at your desired outcome and attainment date, work backwards and break your overarching goal into the milestones you're going to achieve along the way
  3. Make sure your goal is SMART, that is, Specific, Measurable, Action-Oriented, Realistic and Time-bound.
  4. Remain Optimistic. Expect success. Keep a daily journal of experiences, both good and bad, and what you've learned from them.
  5. STOP worrying about tomorrow. Focus on your goals for today and don't worry about what "might" happen tomorrow, next week or next month. 95 percent of the things we worry about never happen and the other 5 percent are usually beyond our control.
  6. Learn. Schedule time to learn about and reach out to other successful bloggers. Ask them about the biggest lessons they learned on the way to success.
  7. Care for your mental, physical and emotional self. Scheduling quiet time for "thinking" is not an option. Exercise. Get outside and enjoy some fresh air. Get enough sleep, eat healthy and make time for family and friends. Have some fun! 🙂
  8. Live your goal now. Act like you're already a successful money-making blogger. First thing each morning review your goals by reading them to yourself. When people ask you what you do, tell them about your blogging activities.
  • Breathe it!
  • Taste it!
  • See it!
  • Feel it!
  • Hear it!

Live your success as a money-making blogger right now. Step into those shoes through clear visualization.

All high-performing athletes use visualization to win. You MUST use it too.

What If You Develop Perseverance?

Developing perseverance brings a lot of benefits with it.

For one thing, perseverance in the face of obstacles and challenges strengthens your self-confidence

Perseverance also makes you trustworthy, e.g. makes you a person worthy of the trust of others.

Perseverance makes you mentally, physically and emotionally strong.

Perseverance is inspiring. As you see your perseverance increase and your goals and dreams become a reality, you'll be inspired to achieve other lofty goals.

And in the end, perseverance brings success.

Once you've achieved your goal, you'll be glad that you persevered!

Laser Focus - WHY You Must Have It

Laser Focus and Put All your eggs in one basket

Andrew Carnegie

“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket” is all wrong. I tell you “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice; men who do that do not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. It is trying to carry too many baskets that breaks most eggs in this country."

To avoid being pulled in twenty different directions by all of the information you're bombarded with every day you must have laser focus.

To get from A to B as quickly as possible, you must have laser focus.

To create a quality blog, you must have laser focus.

SUCCESS is the result of Laser Focus.

'Nuff said!

WHAT Is Laser Focus?

Definition: Intensely paying attention to a single object, concept, person, or activity to the exclusion of everything else."

That's laser focus!

The One Thing

What's the ONE Thing I can do                                                                                         such that by doing it  everything else will                                       be easier or unnecessary?

"What's the ONE Thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?"

The above question is called the "Focusing Question."

It comes from the book The ONE Thing - The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results, by Gary Keller.

A simple question with powerful results when answered.

You can use the "Focusing Question" to clarify your Big Picture goal.

And you can use it to clarify the small actions you can focus on taking right now, at this very moment, to begin driving towards achieving your Big Picture goal.

Your BIG PICTURE goal = Becoming a Successful Money-Making Blogger.

Your SMALL FOCUS = What's my "ONE Thing" right now to start driving towards my BIG PICTURE goal?

Reading this very long blog post is sure to be a SMALL FOCUS thing that's going to start driving you towards your BIG PICTURE goal of becoming a successful money-making blogger.

And after reading this and taking notes, there will be another SMALL FOCUS thing you'll decide you can do tomorrow to continue driving you towards your BIG PICTURE goal.

That's an example of laser focus.

Ask and answer the "Focusing Question" every day to ensure you're doing the high-value things so everything else will be easier or unnecessary.

That's the beauty and the POWER of the "Focusing Question."

HOW To Develop Laser Focus?

1. Build a routine.

My routine for writing this epically long blog post is to:

  • get up early in the morning (between 5:30 and 6:00am.
  • wash my face and shave.
  • make fresh coffee.
  • go into my man cave.
  • sit down at my desk.
  • fire up my computer.
  • open the file for this post.
  • skim over what I wrote the day before.
  • start writing some more.

There are 9 steps in that routine and every single one is important to get me into the "ZONE" for writing.

Missing just one of those steps is enough to prevent me from getting into the "ZONE."

2. Eliminate distractions.

I write in approximately 50 to 55-minute time blocks. Everything else is shut off or shut out so I can stay in the "ZONE."

  • No email.
  • No mobile phone.
  • No social media.

And I even tell my wife not to disturb me until I emerge from my man cave.

After a writing block is completed, I take a complete break for 10 to 15 minutes.

Routine and elimination of distractions is what will help you get into the "Zone."

3. Obliterate excuses

Do you really, really, really want to become a successful money-making blogger?

If the answer is yes, then there are just no more excuses, okay?

4. Set and execute SMART goals.

"I want to become a successful money-making blogger" is a BIG PICTURE goal.

But it's not a SMART goal.

Because it doesn't define what "successful" means nor does it define the amount of money you want to make from your blogging each month.

A SMART goal is specific, measurable, action-orientated, relevant and time-bound.

A SMART goal forces you to specify what success will look like and how much money you're going to make.

SMART goals break the BIG PICTURE goal down into very specific actions you'll start taking, and the milestones you'll reach along the way to achieving your overarching, BIG PICTURE goal.

5. Start NOW!

Stop thinking and start doing.

You're blog isn't going to write itself.

  • Decide what you want to call your blog.
  • Purchase the domain name.
  • Get hosting.
  • Set up WordPress or whatever other Content Management System you choose.
  • Start writing.

Start NOW!

WHAT IF You Develop Laser Focus?

You're going to become productive like you never dreamed possible.

Everything will be easier than you ever imagined and you're going to eliminate all of the low-value stuff you've been wasting too much time on for far too long.

Developing laser focus will change your life for the better and forever.

So go get laser focused and see you on the other side of success.

Amazing Content - Why You Must Have It

Ramsay Taplin, owner of Blog Tyrant, asked 350 bloggers about their goals, demographics and challenges when blogging.

Here was one of the questions he asked:

Amazing Blog Content

This graphic is courtesy of Blog Tyrant. Thank you Ramsay Taplin.

What do you think?

Is it a coincidence that when asked,

"What are the 3 most important things for building a blogging career?"

"Writing amazing content" was top of the list?

Nope! That's not a coincidence.

So then....

WHAT Is Amazing Content?

Amazing content shares common characteristics. Here are 3 KEY ones:

1. Useful. Your readers must be able to use your content to solve their problems or overcome their challenges. And it must be usable right now.

2. Easy to read and understand.

  • Lots of white space.
  • Bulleted lists.
  • Short sentences and paragraphs.
  • Pictures, graphs and videos.
  • Subheadings that answer your readers questions.

3. Action orientated. You want to be a successful money-making blogger? Then throughout your posts you must ask your readers to take the action you're after. What do you want them to do?

  • Subscribe to your email list?
  • Answer some questions for you?
  • Purchase a digital product?
  • Buy your online course?
  • Join your blogging mastermind?
  • Hire you to coach?
  • Sign up for a webinar?
  • Book a FREE discovery call?

If you keep these 3 key characteristics in mind each time you create a new post, you'll be on your way.

HOW To Create Amazing Content

Brainstorm - put on some brainstorming music and start generating ideas for your amazing content.

Start with a high level idea.

From that, begin writing down every single idea or question that pops into your head.

Don't worry about how crazy some of your ideas may seem, because once done you can weed out the ones you don't like.

Here's a real example of my own brainstorming on the high-level topic, "Creating content and being a successful blogger."

  • What's your WHY?
  • WHY do you want to start a blog?
  • Who do you want to serve through your blog?
  • How will you help your audience?
  • Benefits your audience will get from your blog?
  • How will you monetize your blog? Ebooks and other digital products, online courses, coaching, consulting, physical products, speaking, advertising, affiliate marketing?

With this list alone I have enough ideas to write one epic piece of amazing content or I could write several pieces of amazing content for my audience.

But before you start writing, you need to do the...

Research - it's not difficult, but it takes time.

Here's a result from a Google search for the long tail term "creating content and being a successful blogger."

Research results

The first organic result is a "featured snippet" from the minimalists blog which links to a post "How to Start a Successful Blog in 2018."

Take some time to read through the top 5 to 10 organic results.

You'll get an idea about what other bloggers have said on this subject and what you can do to add value to the topic in your own unique way.

Here are the first 3 results I got using Buzzsumo's Content Analyzer using the search term, "being a successful blogger," and sorting results based on the number of backlinks.

Buzzsumo search

A paid subscription to Buzzsumo reveals which websites those links come from.

Armed with that information, you can write an amazing piece of content and you can reach out to similar sites to politely ask if they'd be willing to link to your post.

What if you simply hate researching?

You'll either need to learn to love it or you're going to have to hire someone to do it for you.

Check out Fiverr if you want to find someone to help you with your research and your writing too.

Get help on Fiverr

Read, read and read some more - the research is done. But now you've got to read.

Reading a lot is a key to becoming an expert on your subject.

Don't like reading?

Then you'll need to find podcasts that cover the topic you want to blog about and listen, listen and listen some more. And take notes.

Here's what a Google search for "being a successful blogger podcasts" turned up.

There's lots of great podcasts listed there, so check 'em out!

10 Inspirational Blogging Podcasts

Write, write and write some more - I already mentioned reading and writing earlier in this post under unbending commitment to hard work.

And here I am mentioning it again.

It's because the only way you'll learn how to write amazing content is by doing a lot of writing.

Just like any other skill you learn, practicing your writing is what will improve your writing.

So start writing.

What If You Create Amazing Content?

Creating amazing content will get your content noticed.

This is because your amazing content will answer the questions and solve the problems that your amazing audience has.

And that's valuable stuff.

And that will lead to your content being shared more and more, which will lead to the growth of your amazing audience.

And that will inspire you to create more amazing content, that will get more shares, and that will further grow your audience.

And once you've got an engaged audience of amazing people who love your content and regularly follow and engage with you, they're going to start asking you to help them individually and in groups.

And they'll be willing to pay you to do that.

And once you've reached that point, you're well on your way to being a successful money-making blogger.

First and foremost, develop a "burning desire" so you don't quit like 90 percent of all the people who start blogs end up doing.

Commit to hard work and perseverance so you keep going for the long haul. Success will not happen overnight, so you need to be diligent, and at the same time patient in order to succeed.

Get laser focused using the "Focusing Question" to help eliminate low-value activities you're wasting time on so you can concentrate fully on high-value activities that will bring success.

Create amazing content that solves the problems and challenges your audience is facing. Doing that will get your content shared and your audience will grow.

If you follow the advice I've provided in this post, you'll be well on your way to becoming a successful money-making blogger.

How long have you been blogging and what are the biggest challenges you're currently facing that you need help to overcome?

I'd love to hear from you in the comments.
