SEO for beginner bloggers is a vital part of getting your blog content seen, read, and acted upon.
Are you a new blogger? If so, what's your blogging goal?
- Monetizing your blog so you can earn passive income?
- Creating a platform to communicate and connect with other like-minded people?
- Becoming a world-renowned blogger?
Whatever your goal is, there are various ways to increase your blog’s visibility online.
But knowing how to do SEO for beginner bloggers is vital so people can easily find your posts when searching for relevant keywords.
In this article, we discuss everything from why and how to do SEO on your blog to drive more traffic to your site.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for “search engine optimization”, a process for optimizing your website with the goal of increasing the number of visitors from organic (not paid) search results.
SEO can be broken down into two main categories: on-page SEO and off-page SEO.
On-page SEO refers to the optimization of a website’s content (e.g. title, description, and body), metadata, and internal links.
Off-page SEO refers to link building, which is the process of obtaining backlinks from other websites that link to your website.
When search engine crawlers visit your website, they look for certain things to determine your page’s ranking, namely your website’s authority, relevance, and quality.
Why is knowing SEO for beginner bloggers important?
With more than 3.5 billion people using the internet today, the competition for eyeballs is fierce.
And you want people to find your blog posts and benefit from the content you create, right?
This is why knowing how to do SEO for beginner bloggers is crucial to the success of your blog.
FACT: if you want people to see and read your blog posts, you need to try your best to get your posts listed on the first page of the SERPs (search engine result pages).
Most beginner bloggers don’t have the budget for paid advertising or the team to run an effective PR campaign, so knowing how to do search engine optimization is a critical component of their marketing strategy.
If you don't know how to do SEO for beginner bloggers you'll lose readers to other sites that rank higher in the search engines.
4 steps to SEO for beginner bloggers
The following is an overview of the SEO process for bloggers:
Step One: Keyword research
The first and most important step in knowing how to do SEO for beginner bloggers is understanding how to do keyword research.
Keyword research is the process of identifying the words that have low competition along with sufficient search volume.
Finding the right keywords to create blog posts around will help your blog rank higher in Google’s SERPs. Once you have identified target keywords, you can use them throughout your article, including the URL (the web address), title and meta description.
The most important part of knowing how to do SEO for beginner bloggers is knowing how to do keyword research.
What comes next?
SEO for beginner bloggers - Step Two: Creating content
The next step in doing SEO is creating unique, high-quality content.
The more targeted, engaging, and original the content is, the more likely you are to get links from other blogs that want to refer to it. The more backlinks you get, the higher your blog will rank in Google’s SERPs.
This is because links from other websites and blog posts to your website and blog posts tell Google that those sites view your posts as expert, authoritative, trustworthy.
Google refers to those 3 factors by the acronym E.A.T.
Targeting the right keywords, and then building content around those keywords is the key to driving organic traffic to your blog.
You can also use paid ads (see step four) to drive traffic to your blog posts. However, the more organic traffic you can get, the better off you'll be since organic traffic doesn't cost you any money to get aside for the time it takes to research and write your content.
Step Three: WordPress Optimization
Now that you have chosen a topic and written a few blog posts, it’s time to optimize your WordPress blog for SEO.
First, choose a URL that is both memorable and relevant to your blog’s content. My blog is all about content, content marketing, blogging, and copywriting.
I chose Content Igniters for my URL because I create content that is meant to "ignite" ideas in the audience I serve, which includes freelancers, coaches, and small business owners.
Second, add an image to your blog’s home page, along with an enticing title and a short description.
To optimize your blog posts, you need to go to the “Edit” page of each post and include your target keywords in the “Title” and “Meta Description” fields.
This way, your target keywords will be displayed in bold letters at the top of your blog post when it appears in Google’s SERPs.
Note in the screen shot below how I've included my Focus keyphrase for this post "seo for beginner bloggers" in the "SEO Title," and "Meta Description."

SEO for beginner bloggers - Step Four: Google AdWords
If you have the budget to run paid advertisements, you just might want to try out Google AdWords, Google’s advertising platform that lets advertisers run paid search ads.
AdWords can be an effective SEO strategy for beginner bloggers if you know how to use it properly. The first step is to select a core keyword and then build an ad around it.
With the right budget and an optimized ad, you can increase your blog’s visibility in Google’s SERPs and drive more traffic to it.
As I mentioned at the end of Step Two, the advantage of organic traffic over paid traffic is that organic traffic is free of charge, so the more organic traffic you can drive to your blog posts, the better off you'll be.
Summing up
Blogging is a powerful tool that can help you reach new audiences, build your personal brand, earn passive income, as well as communicate and connect with like-minded people.
To be effective, however, your blog needs to rank high in Google’s search results.
To achieve this, you need to implement SEO on your blog.
The first step is to choose keywords that are low competition, relevant to your content, have decent search volume.
Then, create compelling, user-friendly content and optimize your blog for those keywords by including them in your post title and meta description.
Last but not least, make sure that your blog is accessible to search engines by optimizing your WordPress blog.
