There are challenges that come with being an online coach, which is why I wanted to share 7 big challenges online coaches face in 2022 and beyond, as these challenges will undoubtedly affect how successful you are as an online coach in the future. What is an Online Coach?

A coach is someone who helps others to improve their lives or reach their goals. Some coaches prefer to work face-to-face with their clients, while others work online and only occasionally meet face-to-face with their clients.

Online coaching is becoming more popular as more and more people are working remotely.

Online coaches come from every industry you can think of, including health/fitness, business, travel, relationships, etc.

Since there is no certification or standard for becoming an online coach, this article is written for those who are interested in pursuing this as a career or even a part-time job.

The important thing to note is that coaching is not therapy. A coach is someone who helps others reach their goals by providing guidance, tools, and frameworks.

Therapy, on the other hand, is when a person works with a professional who helps them work through their issues and heal from trauma.

Let’s take a look at the 7 big challenges currently affecting online coaches.

Being aware of these challenges, will arm you with the knowledge needed to overcome them, as they will affect the level of success you you have as an online coach in the future. Let’s dive in! 

1: Understand Yourself First

The first step in finding your audience is to understand yourself.

  • What are your strengths, weaknesses, and passions? 

  • What types of people do you want to work with? (Not every person is going to be your ideal client).
  • How many hours each week are you willing to put into building your online coaching business? 
  • How much experience and knowledge do you have in the subject you're thinking about coaching people on?
  • What resources do you have right now to achieve your goals as an online coach?
  • What resources do you still need to acquire? 

These are a few of many questions you should answer in order to identify any gaps between where you want to be and your current situation. With that knowledge you can work on closing those gaps. 

2: Finding Your Audience As An Online Coach

This is probably one of the biggest challenges online coaches face, and to be clear, you need to find the RIGHT audience, not just an audience in general. 

Choosing to specialize by focusing on a specific niche makes it easier to find your audience than if you decide to cast a wide net and go after everyone.

For example, you could decide that you want to coach new mothers on how to successfully care for their new babies.

There's nothing wrong with that, but you could make this even more specific by focusing on new mothers over 30 who don't want to stop working while successfully caring for their new babies

Another example of finding the right audience and being very specific might be coaching men over 60 on how to lose their body fat so they can see their abs again.

That's more specific than coaching men over 60 to lose weight, isn't it?

Drilling down to get really specific about your niche will draw your audience to you, especially as you'll be joining and engaging with social media groups and forums that are related to the niche you choose. 

3: Knowing Your Audience

It's one thing to find your audience, which I covered above, it's another thing to know your audience.

What does it mean to know your audience?

It means you know the most common problems your audience is facing, the goals and desires your audience has for the future, and the most common methods your audience is using to try to solve their problems and achieve their goals and desires, and why those methods are not working for your audience.

Once you know those things, you can start producing content that will resonate with and engage your audience. To help you achieve that, ask yourself the following questions:

  •  Does my content catch the reader's attention?
  • Is it interesting, positive, and helpful?
  • Is it easy to read, watch, and listen to?

4: Producing Great Content As An Online Coach

Online coaches find that regularly and consistently producing great content to help your audience solve problems, answer questions, and achieve goals is another big challenge.

Ideally, each piece of content should serve a specific purpose and bring value to your audience. There are many ways to produce great content. Blog posts, podcasts, videos, images, and courses are a few examples. 

Not having enough time to create helpful content regularly and consistently is where many online coaches fail. You may have good intentions, and even start producing content for your website/blog, but after a few weeks of trying to keep up, you start to slow down and before you realize it, you've stopped.

If you have enough time to produce great content, but you don't enjoy the production process, e.g. writing, editing, filming, or recording, you're not alone. When people search for coaches, they want to know if they are legit. Currently, there are many peer-reviewed coaching directories that exist.

However, being on such a list doesn’t guarantee success for you as an online coach. There are other ways you can gain credibility and prove to others that you are trustworthy.

One way to establish trust is by creating your own coaching website. This is a great way to introduce yourself and your coaching services to the world. It’s also an excellent way to prove that you are legitimate and trustworthy. 

That being said, if you're going to create your own coaching website, it’s important that you create one that is professional and memorable. 

Another way to establish trust is by getting coaching testimonials from past clients. This helps prove that you are a legitimate coach.

You can also get coaching testimonials by offering coaching as a free service. Doing this will not only help you get coaching testimonials but also help you get your name out there and receive referrals through the individuals who have benefited from your coaching.

6. Marketing By Being An Expert

Marketing is always a challenge for anyone in any industry. And online coaches are no exception. But online coaches have a unique opportunity to stand out.

What does this involve?

It's done by creating and sharing valuable content that helps your audience solve their problems while helping them see your expertise and turning that expertise into your brand.
