How do bloggers make money may just be a $64,000 dollar question, and I'm not going to blow smoke in this post because I'm a blogger and I'm not making a cent of passive income from this blog - yet.
But I will be. So, based on my own research, study, learning, and actions, in this post I'm going to break it down for you so you can start following in the footsteps of bloggers who do make money so you can start earning a passive income in 2023 right along with me.
First, let's define a few things.
What Is Passive Income?
For the purposes of this post, passive income refers to money bloggers earn through ads placed on their blogs, affiliate marketing, and selling digital products such as Ebooks and courses.
How much passive income can you make blogging?
The amount of passive income you can make blogging varies, of course.
But, based on my research and what I'm learning from the team at Income School, it's feasible to start earning $1000/month from your blog within 12 months of starting.
Some bloggers earn less than that and many bloggers earn significantly more than that per month within the first year or so. In fact, you're likely going to want to check out this video to learn how to Take Your Blog From 0 To $1K Per Month In A Year Or Less!
So, let's explore what I've learned and what I'm personally doing to take Content Igniters from 0 right now to earning passive income for me within the next 12 months.
Making Money Blogging Requires An Upfront Investment
Let me be clear.
Although starting your blog doesn't require a large upfront monetary investment, if you're going to make a passive income from your blog, you must be willing to invest a lot of time and energy upfront.
The reason is that for the first two to three months - at least - you're going to need to create a lot of content, e.g. write a lot of blog posts.
How much is a lot of blog posts?
Well, for me personally, my aim is to publish at least one new post every day of the week. Jim Harmer and Ricky Kessler, from Income School, are both adamant that your main focus when starting your blog should be on "pressing publish" every, single day.
And they recommend publishing at least 50 to 60 posts within the first couple of months, and then "slowing down" to two or three posts each week after that.
90 percent of your time as a new blogger should be on creating content for your new blog.
Period. Full stop!
Forget all of the distractions with a new blog. Don't worry about design, fancy plugins, metrics, etc. Focus completely on creating content, eg. writing quality blog posts, because that's the only thing that's going to move the needle and help people find your blog so you can start making a passive income blogging.
Write Content Like A Professional
If you're creating garbage posts, you're going to get garbage for results. This means you've got to learn how to write content like a professional.
This leaves you thinking, how do you write content like a pro?
Here are 4 tips:
- Keep your message concise.
- Clarify why your message is important to you and your audience.
- Make your readers feel unique and cared for.
- Write with emotion.
- Write with a sense of urgency.
- Know who your audience is.
I've written an entire post on this topic here, so feel free to check it out.
How Do Bloggers Make Money With Ads?
Most bloggers use ads to make money from their blogs and there are a lot of good ad networks that give bloggers the ability to place ads on their sites and earn money when readers click on those ads.
Some of the better known ad networks are:
I personally am going to start with Ezoic, as there is no minimum traffic number needed to join their program, which is great for new bloggers like me.
Other ad networks require that you have a minimum number of visitors to your site each month, and if you're just starting out, this can make it impossible for you to use these networks.
For instance, Mediavine requires your blog to have 50,000 sessions in the previous 30 days to join their network.
And Adthrive requires 100,000 monthly pageviews to join theirs.
Hence, if you're a new blogger, you can forget about using Mediavine or Adthrive for a long time into the future.
As Jim Harmer, from Income School, states about Ezoic, "the thing that sticks out the most to me is they have your back before you 'make it,' I love that they will work with newer creators and getting them the first paycheque and getting them excited about it is huge and I love that, in terms of mission, like I want to support them because they do that. Mediavine and Adthrive, they do not care about you until you make the minimum (traffic numbers per month) and that hurts our industry."
If you want to check out Ezoic to start placing ads on your blog, you can do that here. (this is an affiliate link and I may receive a commission, at no extra cost to you, should you sign up for Ezoic through that link).
How Do Bloggers Make Money With Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is another way that bloggers earn a passive income.
As an affiliate you would earn a commission by promoting a product or service made by another company or advertiser using an affiliate link.
There are thousands of affiliate programs that bloggers can sign up for in order to earn commissions. Of course, it's best if you actually are using the products or services that you're promoting, and in some cases the affiliate partner will require that you actually use their product or service.
Please be aware that according to the FTC guidelines, you must disclose affiliate links whenever you place them on your website or any of your blog posts. This is so your site visitors know that you are receiving a commission if they purchase a product or service through the link you provide.
On my blog, you will find affiliate links placed in posts from time to time. If you click on one of those links and end up purchasing a product or service I've recommended to you, I will receive a commission at no extra cost to you.
Please be aware that I only recommend products or services that I personally use.
I currently promote 3 different services as an affiliate. They are:
WPX Hosting for my web hosting. They are simply the fastest hosting platform around and their customer service is beyond fantastic.
I use Thrive Themes entire suite of products because they have the most complete setup anyone needs, including any plugin you would possibly need to run your blogging site setup and earn a living as a blogger. I am currently using their Kwik theme for my blog.
And, as already mentioned, I'm now promoting Ezoic as an affiliate because it's the ad network I use and it's new blogger friendly.
How Do Bloggers Make Money With Digital Products?
Finally, many bloggers earn a passive income by creating and then selling their own digital products. These can include:
- online courses
- audio and music
- web-based applications
- pdf documents
- digital art
If you have the knowledge and expertise needed to help your audience solve a specific problem that they're commonly facing or to achieve a goal that they want to achieve, you can create your own digital product and then sell it to your audience.
Most bloggers who are earning a passive income have at least one and some have several digital products they have created and that they sell online to their audience members.
- Earning a passive income with your blog is going to take time, but it is achievable.
- For the first few months, 90 percent of your time should be spent on creating content. Do not get distracted from this. You need to write and publish 50-60 high-quality blog posts within the first couple of months.
- Once you've achieved that milestone, you can publish 2 or 3 blog posts per week to keep adding fresh content to your blog.
- This is when you'll start seeing traffic to your blog increasing.
- When you're ready to begin monetizing your blog for passive income, you can implement ads, affiliate marketing, and even creating and selling your own digital products.
Get started today to implement these suggestions and within 12 months or so you could be earning $1000 dollars each month in passive income from your blog.
This blog post contains affiliate links. When you use one of these links to purchase a product or service that I recommend I receive a commission at no extra cost to you.
