What Is Writer's Block?

Writer's block refers to a writer's inability to come up with any new ideas to write about and causes a writer to feel stuck in a rut and unable to get out. Writer's often describe themselves as feeling all alone in the dark and the silence when they are experiencing writer's block.

What Causes Writer's Block?

A variety of things can cause writers' block, such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Anger
  • Stress
  • Too much doing, not enough thinking
  • Impostor syndrome

With this list of 5 causes of writer's blocks, let's continue with tips for getting rid of each of them.

How You Can Get Rid Of Writer's Block Forever - Overcoming The Causes Of Writer's Block

1. Anxiety and how to overcome it

I'm not a doctor or a psychologist, so if your anxiety has psychological or medical roots, you need to consult a professional.

With that said, one source of anxiety that bloggers often face is a disorganized workspace.

It's vital that you create a workspace that's free from distractions, quiet, neat, and clean.

If your workspace looks like a tornado blew through it, you're not going to have optimal writing conditions and you'll never get rid of writer's block.

A desk covered in papers, a computer with 20 tabs and windows open, and cluttered surroundings all interfere with your focus, and that will cause anxiety.

Therefore, if you're a serious blogger who wants to get rid of your writer's block forever, lessen or completely remove anxiety by organizing your workspace.

You'll be a much more productive and happy blogger when you do that.

2. Anger and how to deal with it

Do you ever feel angry when you write a great blog post and it goes completely unnoticed?

You spend hours researching a topic, you create a great outline, and then you spend several more hours putting together a great blog post for your readers.

And no one comments, and very few people read it.

And that makes you feel angry!

But, the problem is that anger isn't conducive to writing great blog posts unless your blog posts are all angry rants.

Therefore, to deal with anger and get rid of writer's block, remember that you're like a fisherman and your blog posts are like multiple fishing lines in the water.

Just as you're not going to hook a fish on every line, you're also not going to hook readers with every blog post. That's just a fact of the blogger's life.

Hence, there's no point getting angry, it doesn't help anything and it's not the way for you to get rid of writer's block.

3. Stress and how to eliminate it

A lot of bloggers get stressed because they have too many things to do during the day.

The solution?

Learn how to block out time for each of the tasks/activities you have to get done daily.

With this in mind, schedule your day in one-hour time blocks where you focus on only one task at a time until it's done.

So, turn off or block out any distractions, and give that task your undivided attention for that one hour.

Once you've completed that task, or once that hour is up, whichever comes first, take a complete ten to fifteen-minute break from anything work-related.

Let your brain rest

Regular work breaks throughout the day give your brain a chance to rest, recharge, and refresh, which is a vital for getting rid of writer's block.

Taking a break will give you an entirely new perspective on the topics you're trying to tackle which will allow you to come up with new ideas.

When you return to writing, you'll be able to hit the ground running and come up with tons of new content.

Specifically, one of the best things you can do during your work breaks is getting outside for a walk.

In fact, a combination of fresh air and exercise is one of the best ways to improve your creativity and get rid of writer's block.

4. Too much doing, not enough thinking

Although it's important to have a good schedule and to use time blocks to get everything done, one of the foremost causes of writer's block is doing too much without spending enough time thinking

Consequently, I want you to burn this quote from Warren Buffet into your brain:

“I insist on a lot of time being spent, almost every day, to just sit and think. That is very uncommon in American business. I read and think. So I do more reading and thinking and make less impulse decisions than most people in business. I do it because I like this kind of life.”

Granted, Warren Buffet isn't a blogger struggling with writer's block.

But if the world's most famous and successful investor knows how valuable it is to take time to read and think, bloggers should do the same thing.

In fact, reading and thinking is one of the best ways to rid yourself of writer's block.

For this reason, you should schedule time for this each and every day. You'll be amazed at how effective just sitting and thinking is at getting rid of your writer's block.

5. Impostor syndrome and how to get rid of it

Oh boy, this is a big one when it comes to writer's block.

Imposter syndrome is doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud. It often affects high achievers who refuse to accept their achievements. Individuals suffering from impostor syndrome may believe that they don't deserve recognition or reward related to their expertise and accomplishments.

You may be an expert in a specific subject or field, but because you've never had any formal schooling in it, and have gained your knowledge and expertise on your own in the real world, you feel like an impostor.

The result is that the anxiety and pressure created by impostor syndrome can cause writer's block - big time!

If you believe you don't write well, I've written a post on what to do if you think your writing isn't good enough

"The best way I know of to stop feeling like an impostor is to stop thinking like one."

That may sound simplistic, but the truth is that your impostor syndrome starts inside your mind with the internal script you're playing and listening to over and over again, like a broken record.

Hence, if you're consciously aware of what you're telling yourself that causes you to feel like an impostor, you can then change your internal script, which will help you get rid of writer's block.

For example, instead of telling yourself,

"I have no business blogging on this subject and my readers are going to find out that I don't know what I'm writing about," tell yourself, "every successful blogger had to start from zero, without knowing everything, but every one of them was bold enough to get moving. And besides, I can do research on any topic that I need to know about and then report my findings to my audience."

Or instead of telling yourself, "I'm never going to have a blog or a following like so and so," tell yourself, "I can learn a lot from so and so in order to help me succeed with my blog and grow my own audience."

By changing your internal script, you change your thoughts and feelings, get rid of your impostor syndrome and your writer's block at the same time.
