Wouldn’t it be great if, regardless of what you do, you could perform at the highest level you’re capable of?

Imagine if you could carry out your job with seemingly no effort and yet achieve results far beyond what you’re currently getting.

Imagine what your life would be like if you could learn to focus all of your attention and energy on the activities that are essential to success.

How would you feel if you could get most of your work done before noon each day? What would you do with all of that extra time available to you?

Would you pursue an interest or hobby that you’ve always wanted to do but never had the time for?

Would you spend more time with family members, like your spouse, parents, or children?

The ways that you could use all of the extra time are numerous, probably endless, right?

But, does all of this seem like simply an unattainable dream to you because of the current reality of your situation?

You may be that person who’s been working at the same job for a number of years and you’ve lost all of your enthusiasm for what you do because you feel bored and there’s no efforts made by your manager to engage with you or the rest of the team.

Of are you that person who loves what you do but at the same time you have an incredibly difficult time to focus on one thing-at-a-time, causing you to be busy all day but unproductive at the same time?

You may be a new mom who’s chosen to quit working for now so you can be at home with your child, but after 6 months of this routine you’re starting to wonder if you made the right decision because you’ve really got a yearning to do something in addition to caring for your child.

Are you a small business owner who’s feeling overwhelmed by all of the seemingly endless tasks that need to be take care of, your head is spinning and you feel like you’re running on a hamster wheel to nowhere and you don’t know how to get off so you can just slow things down and start creating more time for yourself and your family?

You could be that individual who loves your job but feel as if you’re never quite able to achieve the level of performance that would satisfy you. It seems like you’re always just a little shy of achieving your goals and the level of performance that you believe you’re capable of.

Maybe you’re a single parent, a mom or dad who’s trying their very best to raise a child on their own. You’ve got to work, care for a home and your child, and you feel completely exhausted day in and day out and as if you’re never going to get out of the situation you’re in. You feel like you're standing inside a very deep hole that you'll never get out of.

If any of those individuals I just described sound like you, it’s because they are you. Before I set out to put this series of posts together, I made sure to ask the people I’m connected with about the kinds of challenges they’re facing each and every day, and their answers are the basis for the descriptions of the individuals above.

There are two things you need to understand.

First and foremost, you’re not alone. There are millions of individuals in the same situations and who can relate to the things you’re feeling right now.

Secondly, there are also millions of individuals who’ve gotten out of these kinds of situations and are now living life very differently than they did in the past.

They’ve learned the secrets to:

  • achieving high performance and getting the results they always dreamed of but never seemed capable of attaining.
  • focusing on the essentials and eliminating overwhelm.
  • productivity and getting things done in a much shorter period of time each day so they have time to pursue other interests.
  • feeling happy and satisfied with their situation in life instead of feeling trapped and discontented.

Now, for those of you reading this who don't know me, I made a choice many, many years ago, along with my wife, to never, ever, work at a full-time job. And both of us have never, ever, worked at full-time jobs.

For 28 years, we've only worked part-time, and for many of those years we've worked for ourselves.

And during these 28 years, do you know what kind of life we've had?

A very interesting, exciting, and fulfilling one, if I may say so myself.

We've lived in the Caribbean on the island of St. Vincent (1992 to 1994), Taiwan (2001 to 2006, Mainland China (2006 to 2014), and as I write this we’re living in Frankfurt, Germany.

We began learning Mandarin back in 1998 while still living in Canada, and after spending 13 years in Taiwan and mainland China, we’ve become fluent in the language.

Before we were married in 1988, we also decided not to have children because we wanted to have more freedom to pursue the goals that were important to both of us and raising a child or children wasn’t at the top of our list.

We never feel like we’ve missed out on anything because we didn’t pursue careers in the traditional sense. In fact, our life has been full of adventure, learning new cultures, and making friendships with people all over the world.

And one of the main reasons we’ve been able to have the experiences we’ve had is because we’ve pursued a lifestyle that has allowed us a relative level of freedom that most people today don’t even think is possible.

One thing I want to emphasise here is what I’m not saying. I’m not saying that our life is perfect, as if we’ve never had any challenges or obstacles to overcome, because we have.

I’m also not suggesting that our lifestyle is the exact same kind of life that everyone should, can, or desires to live.

But there are some basic principles and attitudes that I believe all people should learn, develop, and apply in order to get the most out of themselves and their life.

If you do so, you’ll be able to SOAR.

And that’s what I want to help you to achieve.

So in this post, the first in the SOAR series, we’re going to cover the following:

  1. The biggest obstacle preventing you from really taking off in life and SOARing.
  2. How to smash that obstacle into itty-bitty pieces once and for all so it never gets in your way again.
  3. Where to get the lift you need to SOAR.
  4. Setting your sight on the future.

So let’s get right to it.

The biggest obstacle that is preventing you from taking off in life and SOARing

What are you doing at this very moment?

You may be thinking, “that’s a silly question to ask because I’m reading this blog post.”

Correct, you’re reading this blog post, but the question isn’t silly at all because the fact is you’re doing a lot more right now than simply reading this.

You see, reading this post is what you’re currently conscious of, but there are a heck of a lot of other things that you’re also doing right now that you’re not conscious of.

Like breathing.

Do you know how many breaths you’re taking every minute?

Not likely - unless you focus your consciousness on your breathing and start counting how many breaths you take each minute.

If you’ve ever tried meditating, then being conscious of your breathing and counting the breaths may be something you’ve done.

But as you and I go through our daily activities, we spend most of the time breathing unconsciously.

And there are a lot of other things we do unconsciously, that is, without ever focusing on or thinking about them.

It’s important to remember that your mind has two parts, the conscious and the unconscious and that both parts of your mind have a significant impact on the quality of your life, your habits, and your feelings.

Driving a car is a great example of a skill that, once we’ve learned to do it well, we carry out unconsciously.

Have you ever had the experience where you’re driving while being absorbed in thought about something that you’re dealing with or need to do, and when you arrive at your destination you can’t remember the route you took to get there?

That’s an example of accomplishing a task that you’ve become unconsciously competent at. You've done it so many times before that you don't need to think about it. You just do it.

Each day you perform certain tasks at such a high level of skill and that you’re not consciously aware of, that is, until you actually consciously think about what’s involved in performing those kinds of tasks.

And then it’s quite mind blowing to think of everything that’s involved in driving your car from one destination to another.

But here’s the main point I want you to think about.

Since you know there are certain activities you currently perform unconsciously and at a very high level of competence, what would happen if you could use the same mind - your mind - to achieve the same level of unconscious competence in any other way you desire?

In how many different ways would that impact your life?

What would your life look like and how would you feel three months, or six months, or one year from now if you could learn how to use your unconscious mind to completely change your outlook on life and even completely change your current situation in life for the better?

What impact would being able to achieve any goal you set have on you, your work and your family?

Well, here we are. We've arrived at the first destination on our journey, which was to discover the biggest obstacle that is preventing you from really taking off in life and SOARing.

Your subconscious mind and the beliefs that you've acquired over time that are blocking the way to taking off in life and SOARing.
