Use the Power of the Placebo to Drive Your Online Success
Imagine an elderly patient, tall and stooped over, being wheeled into a lab in order to receive his usual dose of medication for Parkinson's disease.
At the same time that he receives his medication, he is also asked to sit through a 90-minute, high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET) scan. His doctor wants to get a picture of his brain to observe the effects the medication has, allowing her to get a more in-depth idea of how to successfully treat Parkinson's disease.
After the 90-minute PET scan, the doctor is happy with the pictures.
And the patient, responding well to his dose of medication, walks past the wheelchair and up a flight of stairs to a debriefing room.
Only thing is, the medication the elderly patient received was no real medication at all.
It was a placebo!
"When I told him he actually got a placebo, he laughed at me. He was like, 'Are you serious? I can't believe I was able to do this on my own without my medicatio,'" said Dr. Sarah Lidstone, who conducted that experiment at the University of British Columbia.
When Lidstone’s team analyzed the patients’ brain activity, the PET images showed dopamine flooding the synapses in the crucial motor control region of their brains, just as surely as from a dose of medication.
What the Power of the Placebo Tells Us About Succeeding
The power of the placebo tells us that our mindset, what we believe, can have an incredible, some might even say, miraculous effect.
If simply believing one is receiving real medicine can actually create a chemical response in the brain that has physical benefits to the individual, how important a role do you think our beliefs would play in achieving success?
Why do so many people try starting their own businesses only to give up after a relatively short time?
Beliefs! Self - limiting beliefs, to be exact!
Here are some examples of self-limiting beliefs:
- I don't have the skills to succeed at business.
- I don't have self-discipline.
- I'm too old to start a business.
- I'm not smart enough.
- I could never do that.
- Taking risks always turns out bad for me.
- Successful people are just lucky and I don't have good luck.
- I make too many mistakes when I try something new.
- I'm a terrible money manager or time manager.
And the list could go on and on, but you get the idea.
In fact, what I'd like you to do right now, before you continue reading, is write down the self-limiting beliefs that you have about yourself and your ability to succeed with your own business, whether online or not.
Now that you've got a list, whether long or short makes no difference, of the beliefs that are holding you back from achieving the success you say you want, you've got to turn each of them on their heads.
You've got to begin to get rid of those negative beliefs and replace them with the exact polar opposite beliefs.
For example, "I don't have the skills to succeed at business" becomes "I have developed a lot of skills over the years that I can leverage and harness to succeed at whatever I want to succeed at."
"I don't have self discipline" becomes "I do have self discipline and I am going to choose to start using my self discipline to achieve my goals."
"I'm too old to start a business" becomes "If Fauja Singh could complete the Toronto Waterfront Marathon at 100 years of age, I can start a business at my age."
"I'm not smart enough" becomes "If a high school dropout, like Richard Branson, could become a billionaire business tycoon, then I have enough smarts to start my own business too."
And on you go, completely changing those self-limiting beliefs you have into positive affirmations of your ability to pursue your dreams and goals with gusto!
This is not simply some kind of "fun little exercise" in reframing your beliefs.
This is the power of the placebo effect.
And if you're really ready to go after what it is that you've wanted to go after for some time now, you have absolutely got to consciously choose to change your beliefs.
No one can do this for you. You can get a coach to help you, or friends to give you encouragement and suggestions, but in the end, the difference between succeeding and not succeeding has nothing to do with luck.
It has everything to do with your mindset and your determination to do the work required to succeed.
And you can succeed!, because you are the raw material for everything you have been, are at present, and can be in the future.
Remember the power of the placebo effect and use it to develop your winning mindset!
